Thought you all might like to give it a try. You are allowed to use the books, but the fun part is to try to get as many answers as possible without flipping through the three novels. I had one contestant get a 95% without using the books AT ALL. Pretty amazing feat! I'll post the answers in a couple of weeks. PLEASE don't EMAIL me for the answers! PLEASE don't email me YOUR answers. I repeat, I WILL POST the answers in a couple of weeks, so you can all check your answers for yourself. So, without further ado, here is the "official" LoTR quiz as given in our old fan club: ----------- begin quiz ------------ Throughout the quiz, "Lord of the Rings" is abbreviated as "LoTR". All answers may be found in the LoTR trilogy only. No question is asked where you could only find the answer in "The Hobbit", "The Silmarillion", or any other works by Tolkien. In addition, you will not have to use the Prologue or any of the Appendices to obtain your answers (although they might be of some help). Some of the words in the quiz contain accented vowels and other special characters. Observe the following bracketed word: [Theoden] If your system displays it as Theoden, with an accent over the first 'e', then your mailtool or editor is capable of displaying these special characters. If you see garbage where the accented 'e' should be, or perhaps the 'e' is missing altogether, then please substitute the appropriate vowel instead. Spelling doesn't count, as long as it's close enough for me to figure out what you meant. When names are required, give an actual name; answers such as "Tom Bombadil's wife" or "Saruman's tower" will *not* be accepted. @@@ GOOD LUCK!!! @@@ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ <<< BEGINNING OF LoTR QUIZ >>> PART ONE -- QUOTES: Name the speaker of each quote given. There are ------------------- no duplicates (i.e. all 32 quotes are given by 32 different characters). a. "This is the hour of the Shire-folk, when they arise from their quiet fields to shake the towers and counsels of the great." b. "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." c. "To use this thing is perilous. At this hour, to send it in the hands of a witless halfling into the land of the Enemy himself, as you have done, and this son of mine, that is madness." d. "I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?" e. "And now at last it comes. You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! ... Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!" f. "I don't care. I have given you a present already, more than I could afford. I found this, and I'm going to keep it." g. "That's done it! Now I've rang the front-door bell! Well, come on somebody! Tell Captain Shagrat that the great Elf-warrior has called, with his elf-sword too!" h. "To know that I lived and walked the earth was a blow to his heart, I deem; for he knew it not till now." i. "Ah yes, I recognized the name. I recollect the time when young Frodo Baggins was one of the worst young rascals of Buckland." j. "If all the seven stones were laid out before me now, I should shut my eyes and put my hands in my pockets." k. "Mr. Bilbo never did a kindler deed than when he brought the lad back to live among decent folk." l. "In that hour I looked on Aragorn and thought how great and terrible a Lord he might have become in the strength of his will, had he taken the Ring to himself. Not for naught does Mordor fear him." m. "The staff in the hand of a wizard may be more than a prop for age." n. "In happy hour you have returned to us, Gandalf. ... Since Gandalf's head is now sacred, let us find one that it is right to cleave." o. "I will be a shieldmaiden no longer, nor vie with the great Riders, nor take joy only in the songs of slaying. I will be a healer, and love all things that grow and are not barren. No longer do I desire to be a queen." p. "I know a tune for him. Old grey Willow-man! I'll freeze his marrow cold, if he don't behave himself. I'll sing his roots off." q. "Alas! if he should die. Would that there were kings in Gondor, as were once upon a time, they say! For it is said in old lore: _The hands of the king are the hands of a healer._ And so the rightful king could ever be known." r. "I am a true man, neither thief nor tracker. I need your Ring: that you know now; but I give you my word that I do not desire to keep it. Will you not at least let me make trial of my plan? Lend me the Ring!" s. "Are we not both members of a high and ancient order, most excellent in Middle-earth? Our friendship would profit us both alike." t. "The Red Arrow! The Red Arrow has not been seen in the Mark in all my years! Has it indeed come to that? And what does the Lord Denethor reckon that all my strength and all my speed may be?" u. "Do you bring men? Do you bring horses, swords, spears? That I would call aid; that is our present need. But who are these that follow at your tail? Three ragged wanderers in grey, and you yourself the most beggar-like of the four!" v. "They have called me that ever since I said _yes_ to an elder Ent before he had finished his question. Also I drink quickly, and go out while some are still wetting their beards." w. "So that is the answer to all the riddles! The One Ring that was thought to have perished from the world. And Boromir tried to take it by force? And you escaped? And ran all the way -- to me! And here in the wild I have you: two halfling's, and a host of men at my call, and the Ring of Rings!" x. "Alas! We long have feared that under Caradhras a terror slept. But had I known that the Dwarves had stirred up this evil in Moria again, I would have forbidden you to pass the northern borders, you and all that went with you." y. "Why, I feel all thin, sort of _stretched_, if you know what I mean: like butter that has been scraped over too much bread." z. "Ach, sss! Caution, my precious! More haste less speed. We musstn't rissk our neck, musst we, precious?" aa. "_Hrum, Hoom_. Very odd indeed! Do not be hasty, that is my motto. ...Very odd you are, indeed. Root and twig, very odd!" bb. "Kill gorgun! Kill orc-folk! No other words please Wild Men. Drive away bad air and darkness with bright iron!" cc. "Well, do as you think best! I am more afraid of the Old Forest than of anything I know about: the stories about it are a nightmare; but my vote hardly counts, as I am not going on the journey." dd. "But they shall help to rebuild Isengard which they have wantonly destroyed, and that shall be Sauron's, and there his lieutenant shall dwell: not Saruman, but one more worthy of trust." ee. "I would cut off your head, beard and all, Master Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground." ff. "Of course we understand. That is why we have decided to come. We know the Ring is no laughing-matter; but we are going to do our best to help you against the Enemy."
