Week 11: November 15th - 21st

Monday 1999-11-15

Mrs. Gombos didn't show up. After a while Eszter came to tell that the culture lecture has been cancelled. I visited an internet cafe with Mikko. Quite new computers and fast connection, but not too pleasant or comfortable place. The "cafe" in the "Internet cafe" is highly exaggerated. [And they CAN'T use the scanner.]

We had coffee near the Opera. I'm not feeling too bad despite I haven't eaten enough. Sometimes this way.

Tuesday 1999-11-16

Beautiful, sunny but cold day. Eszter said it had been -6°C last night. I had thought to go jogging in the morning, but I was too lazy to get up in time. Instead, I went jogging at noon after the lecture. The air is very clear, I haven't seen this far from Gellért earlier. I also found out why there're deep grooves in the bottom of running shoes. They're for dog shit.

After shower I was so tired I slept two hours. And three more. Interesting dreams. I should've written them down.

Wednesday 1999-11-17

I slept surprisingly well after yesterday's nap. At night and in the morning it snowed for the first time. The thickness of our window varies so much that I didn't see it's snowing. There's a couple of centimeters snow on cars and grass but the roads are still unfrozen.

The computer lab advances painfully slowly. Unfortunate course selection. Also this week the power was turned of, but the culprit was not caught.

I studied for the mid-term exam that's on Friday. I washed my winter jacket again, but it's still not white. It was smoky in the nearby cafe.

Mikko, Anssi and J-P had had a nice evening on Váci utca yesterday. Two girls had cheated them into a bar (Mephisto) and persuaded them to buy cognac. 5×(cognac+cappuccino) = 31000ft. The cognac happened to cost 6000ft/4cl. The girls had to pay 10000ft of the bill, but they were most likely working for the bar. Besides, Mephisto is on the black list of the Swedish embassy, i.e. it's known to cheat stupid tourists who don't check the price list first.

Thursday 1999-11-18

We heard about the Hungarian Christmas on the culture lecture. Santa comes on December 6th. The kids must polish their boots and put them onto window bench. Clean enough boots he fills with candy. On Christmas Eve Christkindl comes and decorates the Xmas tree and brings the presents while dad is out with the kids. Poor mom. Traditional Christmas food is carp in (surprise) breadcrumbs.

After the lecture I went jogging. On the OS lecture we solved some example problems. Similar ones will be in the exam.

The program for Christmas is clear. We are going to Bormio on the Italian Alps. Mikko reserved an apartment for us.

The others were out at night. Rich people.

Friday 1999-11-19

The arrangements of the mid-term exam were at least weird. The first surprise: one had to bring one's own paper. The Turkish guys were cheating heavily all the time. Talking to each other, tossing and passing papers and going to toilet every five minutes. All the teacher had to say (many times) about it was "Please don't communicate". Didn't help. The exam was rather easy.

At noon it started snowing and in the evening there was about 10 cm snow already. We spent the afternoon in J-P's and Nakki's room doing nothing. In the evening I ate with Mikko, Nakki, Piia and Annika in a good Chinese restaurant on Karinthy Frigyes.

"Beer-Bear" Anssi and his classmate Zsolt (or Szolt as spelled in a birthday card) celebrated their birthday in a pub in Pest. Those who could make it were there ==All\{J-P,Jarkko}. I talked with a Hungarian girl in Swedish a long time (in my time-space). My Swedish is out there.

Saturday 1999-11-20

Janne had a weekend guest, Kimmo Sell from Munich or Lappeenranta. I had met him on a math concentration camp in Päivölä -94. Finland is small. They went to play tennis or something.

We watched videos. I saw the last five minutes of Truman Show, and a sucky baseball movie Cobb. Mikko, Jarkko and Nakki went to a date (?). I ate over-cooked spaghetti with Anssi and J-P in Marcello, after which we played snooker. Worst playing ever anywhere. At least 3/4 of the points came from other's fouls.

Sunday 1999-11-21

A day when I didn't do anything or go anywhere. Seems to be snowing again.
