Week 3: September 20th - 26th

Monday 1999-09-20

I was fighting against the washing machine all morning. The instructions were in Hungarian only, but I should've known how to use it. First I selected a wrong program and the detergent was in wrong compartment. The machine took its time, but it didn't use the detergent at all and didn't spin dry either. On the second try I forgot to open the tap. The third try was successful. The machine is not house broken, and jumps like a maniac until it is so far away that it unplugs itself. Next time I'll try some other floor.

The lectures weren't too crowded. I had to skip the lunch because of baby-sitting the washing machine. I bought shorts, trousers and a new towel. They wanted to see my passport when I tried to pay with credit card, and I had to fetch it. I went jogging and found the Finnish embassy. I saw the flag from the top of Gellért.

Typical bored to everything feeling. I was going to eat something but didn't go 'cause it would have required talking to someone.

Tuesday 1999-09-21

I overslept the morning lectures. The alarm of my phone doesn't wake up too well when the tone is turned off. We learned the basics of Matlab in the Control Theory Labs. Great. I cleaned the room, wiped dusts and the floor. After which Janne brought his dripping laundry on the clotheslines. The spin doesn't work today either.

In the evening I took a couple of beers with J-P, the others are out somewhere. There was going to be free beer downstairs, but apparently they postponed it till tomorrow.

Wednesday 1999-09-22

Boring day. I couldn't find the OS lab so I went to the Hungarian lesson. Mikko N was quite confused. In the afternoon I took another match against the washing machine. It doesn't wash, flush nor spin-dry.

In the evening they server free beer downstairs. It was hardly worth it. Long queue, lots of cigarette smoke, and "Married with Children" in Hungarian on the telly. I went to bed early.

Thursday 1999-09-23

The quality of the OS lectures is suboptimal. Hopefully the book will be good, but I'll get it only after a few weeks. [Didn't like it.]

I visited the Vasarely museum. It was a great place. I was the only customer, and two old guide ladies followed me all the time behind some distance.

We (Finns) played billiards in place X. The others were more or less toxicated. I should cut down my alcohol consumption, though I'm probably next to most sober of us Finns.

Friday 1999-09-24

Having enjoyably challenged time. I should eat more and more often. We played billiards next to the Market Hall in Pest. Mikko's friend Anssi T. + two Finnish girls from Austria were there. We took a taxi to a bar I didn't like at all (Fat Mo's). Too crowded, too hot and too loud. I walked home. The electrical engineering faculty had a party somewhere near. I was thinking of going but couldn't make it. Wrong attitude. Went to sleep.

Saturday 1999-09-25

I woke up after two. Sore throat. Someone had stolen my cheese from the fridge. I spilled the juice on the table. Great. I skipped lunch. Not hungry.

We tried to go to movies in the evening but it was sold out. Mikko, Nakki and Anssi were asking prices on Váci just for fun (30kft, btw). Annika had some difficulties getting the situation. There was a swimming suit rave in the Rudas bath. It would have been nice, had I felt better. Janne is ill, too.

Sunday 1999-09-26

My throat is sore and nose is running. It might be just the dust, cigarette smoke and dirty air, though. We were bathing in Gellért all the day. ({Finns}\{Janne P}, Piia and some Belgian guy.) It's a really hot day. It would have been wiser to just rest in Martos.

They're having some Finnish Days or something in Budapest. I went to see Finnish movies with Jarkko and J-P. We saw the last hour of "Freaking beautiful world", and "Pidä huivista kiinni, Tatjana". The latter was just plain excellent. Yesterday Apocalyptica had a concert here.

I ate with Mikko in a Chinese place. The food was good as far as I could taste anything, and there was enough of it. Next week we might go to Balaton, or something. [Nope.]
