Week 4: September 27th - October 3rd

Monday 1999-09-27

The lectures were empty today. Everybody is ill or otherwise lost. I drink too much coffee. We went to see Lock, Stock and two Smoking Barrels, 440ft. Ok movie, I didn't get approximately any of the jokes. I should learn Hungarian to understand the subtitles...

The washing machine on the 6th floor is ok. The plugbox is not fastened on the wall, though. It feels pretty unsafe. I should draw some pictures. And buy a sleeping bag. I got some nameday cards.

Tuesday 1999-09-28

Silent. I went to lectures in the morning and slept the rest of the day. The Vaasanians had been boozing heavily yesterday. J-P had a date, but she didn't turn out. He lost his phone while sleeping at a tram stop last night. Sünci told everyone about the possibilities to do anything in Martos. There's a library, a music room (2000 records), one can rent bikes, there's a computer club, one can develop pictures etc. etc.

Wednesday 1999-09-29

Still silent. Three students on the Hungarian lecture. I went to sleep at 4 p.m. I woke up at nine to eat something and slept till morning. There would have been free beer downstairs again. And food, too.

Thursday 1999-09-30

I read some I3E magazines in the school library. They asked for a "licence to read" but let me stay anyway. In the evening we (M, J-P, Mirko&Andreas from Aachen) were in the cinema in a local Hervanta (Csepel Island, XXI district). We didn't make it to the last Hév, but luckily the night buses drive all night.

Friday 1999-10-01

Today was the first fumigation party. I.e. the hostel is poisoned to get the cockroaches drunk. Everybody must leave the building between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. In the morning I was in the library and in the school. Then I slept and watched videos with Nakki and Jarkko in Piia's place. We ate somewhere out. I went to bed at six. There would have been some party.

Saturday 1999-10-02

[Opera ticket]

[The great auditorium of the Opera] I walked pissed off on Gellért and in Pest. I should've had breakfast. We went to see Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at the opera. All Finns, Dan and Corey were there. Our seats (500ft) were on the third balcony far away from the stage. That had no effect on following the plot. I could get the main idea, but all that I understood about the lines were "itt van" and "ott van" (here/there is). The other Finns escaped on the half time. Afterwards I checked the plot in the net. It would've been a good idea to do it beforehand.

Sunday 1999-10-03

[Ticket to the museum of fine arts] First good day for a while. It's hot. I visited the museum of fine arts (Szépművészeti múzeum). The Budapest marathon was today, and I watched the runners reaching the finish next to Hősök tere. The museum is too big. I walked over three hours and got tired. There were e.g. Greek and Etruscan pottery, Roman sculptures, An Egyptian collection, icons, Renaissance paintings from all over the Europe, 19th century art, modern art, and an exhibition about one German Reformer with a Latin name I've forgotten.

I ate in a Hare Krishna vegetarian restaurant. Excellent food, must come again. [I tried but 'twas closed.] I went to see Matrix with J-P somewhere in the north (Duna Plaza). When we went there, the underground stopped for a couple of minutes in the tunnel. I guess there was some broken water pipe, or then the train wash station is quite odd. When we took off, the passengers sitting on the other side got a shower through the open windows. An important looking guy didn't appreciate us laughing. The movie was excellent.

We got back as we randomly selected the right night bus (50É). According to the line chart in the survival guide that bus shouldn't go anywhere near there.

The Americans were at Octoberfest in Munich. Would have been a nice trip.
